More home showings

Posted in home by monty on February 24, 2009

This week is full of home showings again as the selling season picks up.  I don’t mind moving but showing your house over and over with all the cleaning and staging is a pain.  I can’t wait until its over!

Finished Switch to VPS

Posted in geek by monty on February 7, 2009

I have completed the conversion from a managed account at ehostpros.com to a VPS account at fluidhosting.com.  EhostPros was good for a long time (several years) but then they did some server upgrades that made cpanel only work on rare occasions.  I was already paying for the VPS for w6talent.com so I decided to move all of my sites there (colicshop.com, goodstart.com, up-high.com, wikiweb.com, w6talent.com).  The VPS support has been super.  I have run into a few problems along the way and they spent a lot of time helping me fix my own errors.  I would use EhostPros again if I ever go back to a non-vps.  I like the VPS because it allows me to run my some of my sites in Squeak.  It took a little work to make sure we didn’t have any email issues with the switch but I think I managed to do it without any lost emails (knock on wood).

Basketball Awards

Posted in family by monty on February 7, 2009

This morning (Saturday) we woke up early and went to the middle school here in town.  There was an award ceremony for the first grade basketball teams.  Every kid got a trophy and there was orange juice and donuts for everyone.  M ate 2 donuts and Z ate one.  M got to sit with his team of first graders all wearing green jerseys and then they were called up as a team and each handed their trophy one by one.  This season was fun. I think next season they play real four quarter games and maybe even keep score.

The list of companies that use Smalltalk already includes about 300

If you are currently programming in Smalltalk you can take the salary survey too:

Converted Site To Smalltalk

Posted in Smalltalk, geek by monty on February 3, 2009

I just converted my GoodStart.com Smalltalk information website from static files and php scripts to Squeak with Comanche and Smalltalk Server Pages.   Now the site is hosted on a VPS and has real objects for things like the job board or the list of companies that use Smalltalk.  The only real visible changes to the site so far are:

  • Salary Survey has all results available and sorted by year
  • Who Uses Smalltalk page is now searchable and sorted by date
  • All user supplied data is approved/denied before being posted on the site
  • Links should sort properly now
  • Many dead links were removed

Please contribute to the site by:

  • posting any Smalltalk jobs you know about
  • posting any company that you know is using Smalltalk
  • adding links to useful Smalltalk websites

Thanks,

Monty
