Gaining Weight

Posted in entertainment, health by monty on April 30, 2008

Basketball playoffs is when I gain weight. I stay up late and watch west coast games and eat popcorn and nuts up until 2:00 AM. I don’t get enough sleep and I over eat daily. So far I’ve gained about 10 lbs over the last month. Not great news. Yesterday I ate well again and slept well since the Lakers have advanced to the 2nd round of the playoffs early. I need to keep doing that .. eating less and not eating late.

Gift Card

Posted in other by monty on April 30, 2008

I got an American Express Gift Card for last Christmas and I have not spent it yet. It was worth $25. Today, I have to drive to the store to use that gift card to buy another gift card (Target or Walmart) because that Amex card will expire tomorrow! Can you believe that it expires? I’m not sure if it stops working entirely or if they just start charging $2.50 per month but either way it stinks. The craziest part is that when my father-in-law bought these gift cards for me he said they charged him $6.50 to activate the card at checkout – he paid a 20% fee just to buy the gift card. Wow.

So, today I’m off to Walmart to convert this card to a gift card that won’t expire.

C++ College Flashback

Posted in friends, geek by monty on April 30, 2008

One of my old coworkers from Progressive called me the other day. She is not a programmer but she is taking a C++ programming class because she thinks she might want to become a programmer. She was having troubles with her C++ homework assignment (dealing with templates, classes, stacks & queues).

Well, let me tell you.. I have not touched C++ since I was in college myself. I asked one of the guys that I work with who does C++ daily to help me remember how things work. He helped me setup an environment using a free compiler to compile and link my code. Then I had to relearn the syntax of templates and get comfortable with pointers again. It feels like a bad flashback college.

She will probably stop by today after work for some tutoring. I hope I can help her understand the concepts that her teacher wants her to learn with this assignment.

Right To Read Week

Posted in family by monty on April 30, 2008

This week is Right To Read Week at M’s school. They sent him home with little pieces of paper to fill out for every book he reads and that we read to him. So far he has been reading about 4 books to us each day and we’ve been reading about the same to him. The class room with the most books read gets a party so he is working hard to help his class get a party. Now he can read just about any kids book we own. I’m very proud of how well he is reading.

Charlie Wilson’s War

Posted in entertainment by monty on April 30, 2008

We rented and watched Charlie Wilson’s War this weekend. The movie was good. I found it interesting from a movie and a historical point of view. Tom Hanks was good as usual. The movie is about how the US got involved in helping the Afghan army fight off the Soviet army during the cold war. It explains that congressman Charlie Wilson almost single handedly coordinated the US funding, training and arming of the Afghan army. I’d give it an A.

Saint Mother’s Day

Posted in family by monty on April 29, 2008

Yesterday, in the car, while driving home from the Home Depot, I overheard Z say something funny to M in the back seat. Z referred to Mother’s Day as “Saint Mother’s Day”. Somewhere along the way he managed to combine Saint Patrick’s Day and Mother’s Day! I love it. Fewer holidays and now mothers are all the Saints they claims to be!

I wonder .. what is an appropriate gift for Saint Mother’s Day? Green beer?
