Still On The Excercise Ball

Posted in work by monty on June 28, 2007

It is pretty comfortable. I sit up straight, use my core muscles much more, switch back and forth between the ball and my chair. When I start feeling myself slouch I just bounce a few times and I correct it. It is like those bouncy balls we had when we were kids (but without the handle). So far it seems to be working. It is hard to say if the frequent changes, breaks, or ball are the main cause. I think all of the above seem to be helping. Fingers crossed – I hope it keeps working.

Good Run Today

Posted in other by monty on June 28, 2007

Finally, I had a good run again. It was harder than usual because I haven’t been able to work out much because of the back pain. Man it was nice to run a couple miles again! I was able to watch all of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report on Tivo during my lunchtime workout. I stretched carefully because when I stretch my hamstrings I tend to strain my back. So far so good :)

Sprinkler

Posted in other by monty on June 27, 2007

Tonight I took the kids out to run through the sprinkler in our front yard. The grass in the front yard is very dry (south facing) and needed to be watered so I had them play up front. They jumped around and had fun for a while but they started to get cold after a little while. Z relaxed on his towel and M rode his big wheel through the sprinkler for a bit longer. We came in after about 45 minutes because it was cooling off and the bugs were starting to come out. I hope that grass perks up.

Taught A Class

Posted in work by monty on June 27, 2007

Today I finally taught that class I was preparing slides for over the last few weeks. It was supposed to be 2 hours long. I started 15 minutes early to get situated with the moderator (company person who organizes the class). The class ran about 40 minutes late too so in all it was a 3 hour phone call. I had one break in the middle and needed it (biology called). The class went pretty well. I had 2 people who asked a ton of questions but that helped me stay focused on their point of view and drew out some good explanations that I would have otherwise skipped. I thought it was a success and hope the attendees did as well. My throat was dry after it (I don’t know how you do it everyday dad).

Exercise Ball as Office Chair

Posted in other by monty on June 25, 2007

With all the back pain I’ve had lately, I decided to try out the exercise ball today as my chair. I’ve been alternating back and forth between my normal Herman Miller Aeron chair and the ball. My back muscles are so weak! I’m a little after only half the day. I’ll keep you posted on how it works out. I have been setting a 30 minute timer on my PC to remind me to switch and stand every 30 min. I’m hoping this all helps! I think I need to stay off my bike for a few weeks so my back can heal and get stronger again :(

Mom’s Cat … Found!

Posted in family by monty on June 25, 2007

So, the great news is that my mom’s cat was found. She baby sat the kids last night so D and I could go out to dinner at The Melting Pot, a fondue restaurant, for D’s birthday – a belated birthday dinner. The cat went out at 9 AM and didn’t come back until the next morning! Mom mom was a mess, worried about how she was going to tell my dad that his cat (and by all accounts favorite child) was missing. But, luckily she turned up. She had no signs of harm. We have no idea where she was. Mom vowed to never let her out again! Thanks Scott for checking for her last night. My mom owes you!

Kobe Bryant Controversy

Posted in entertainment by monty on June 25, 2007

I’m a Lakers fan and a Kobe fan. All the controversy lately about Kobe wanting to be traded is exciting. I hope LA can keep Kobe, keep him happy and make some trades that improve the team. Winning another championship may not happen but that should be their goal. When they don’t make it out of the first round of the playoffs, it means there is some work to be done to improve the team – new players, trade players, etc. I think Kobe should be talking to the Lakers management instead of the news. Entertaining… yep.

Bowling Fund Raiser

Posted in entertainment, family by monty on June 23, 2007

Tonight we had a bowling fund raiser for the Breast Cancer 3 Day walk that D is participating in. It was a Roseland Lanes in Twinsburg. The deal was for $12 you get shoes and bowling for 3 hours. We paid for the kids to bowl since my back is in no shape for bowling and D didn’t want to risk it because has 25 miles to walk between Saturday and Sunday. It started out bad. The kids were on a regular lane (no bumpers) with 4 adults. The adults were nice but it was bad for the kids trying to bowl with no bumpers and waiting so long between turns. After a while I went and asked them to put us on a lane with bumpers and they did. It was just the kids with bumpers and it lasted all night. They had a great time. We spent a bunch of money on tickets to win prizes (profits go to raise money for walkers in the 3Day). We won 2 baskets – lotions, jewelry, neck massager, gift certificates to some salon for hair and nails – not bad at all. Good night, good bowling, good cause.
